A consensus development panel of the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) has issued recommendations on the management of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The monograph "Improving the Management of GERD: Evidence-Based Therapeutic Strategies" is available online at www.gastro.org/phys-sci/edu-cme/GERD monograph.pdf. The panel reviewed data on over-the-counter drugs used to treat symptoms of GERD and concluded that all products have been proved effective, to varying degrees, in relieving mild to moderate GERD when compared with placebo. A review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that compared two or more proton pump inhibitors found minimal clinical differences between the drugs.
Next partNovartis Pharmaceuticals Canada, following discussion with Health Canada, has revised its Product Monograph for Tegretol (carbamazepine) to include in the WARNINGS section information about the risks of Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN) and Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS), particularly in patients of Asian descent. Both conditions involve serious and sometimes fatal dermatologic reactions. The risk of SJS and TEN exists in all patients, but these reactions are generally very rare. However, in some Asian countries the risk is estimated to be approximately 10 times higher than in Western countries. Related Results

Many of the top 100 drugs prescribed in the United States have been shown to deplete a variety of nutrients. For instance, did you know that the HMG-Co A reductase inhibitors Lipitor, Mevacor, Pravachol, and Zocor, as well as the beta blockers, Toprol, and Lopressor, all deplete coenzyme Q10, a nutrient essential to ATP production in cellular mitochondria? It has also been demonstrated that both oral and inhaled corticosteroids, such as hydrocortisone, Prednisone, Azmacort, Flonase, and Serevent, deplete several important minerals, folic acid, and vitamins C and D.
